a peek inside an LA home

celebrity photographer john russo wanted a light, airy, clean, and mostly white home.  between the awesome mid-century architecture, open floor plan, and carefully curated furnishings and art; i'd say the vision was fully achieved.  xx, dana

eclectic mid-century modern for chairish

when chairish asked me long ago to do a mid-century room design, the timing was off and my schedule wouldn't allow for it.  this time around, i obliged.  the task at hand entailed mixing up mid-century modern with any style and i knew this would be a fun and creative endeavor.  most of the furnishings i chose,  and more great mid-century pieces can be found here.  since this style of furniture features clean lines it is easy to incorporate any of these furnishings into your space.

the start of this office design began with the colorful, and very electric, mid-century modern splash oil painting; this anchored the entire room.  from there, i searched through many pages of furniture on the chairish site and this almond lacquered paul frankl mid-century modern desk captured my attention.  i really love the clean lines, brass hardware, and neutral color to help balance out the bold art, graphic vase, and printed pillows.  this design i liken to a symphony of styles, color, textures and contrast.  the two pillows, one in wool and the other in green silk, offer up great visual appeal while having very different lines in the pattern.

this italian mid-century modern floor lamp from 1955, made of bronze and iron, provides sleek lines  much like the desk while also contrasting the rounded lines of the industrial chair.  the pod chairs...well...those are just too cool!  they add another texture and more neutrality in contrast to the explosive and bold art and pair so well with the brass c jere style octagonal table.  so there you have it,  my symphony in design.  xx, dana

room design | curie baby nursery

last week was art install day and styling for my client's soon-to-be-born baby girl space shared with her 8 year-old big sister.   here is the initial design mini-design board posted a few weeks ago and on instagram:

my wonderful client hired me initially for a feng shui consultation, but it quickly evolved into a design job.  in less than 5 weeks, she was due to have her baby girl!  knowing that we couldn't get everything done in such a short time span, a two-part plan was put in place.  new furniture, new paint, new bedding, new window treatments, new accessories and new art for phase one.  phase two will include new flooring and lighting (we've already agreed on new task lighting and it has been ordered).

at this point, my client already looked at furniture, and had some of it ordered.  after measuring the room,  we sent back a long dresser, it simply wasn't going to fit anywhere.  orders were placed for the bunk bed, diaper changing table and crib.  i suggested painting the interior of the closet, using the existing shelves (there were plenty) as a dresser with nice organization bins holding items, and hanging key pieces of clothing.  my client loved the idea, so the closet was painted the same as the walls in benjamin moore's white dove (and all the oak trim and doors) with one section in the pale peachy pink below.

at the initial color consultation with my client, i suggested white dove for the walls knowing she had already looked at grey bedding for the bunk bed.  this color is a wonderful neutral white with just a hint of grey.  she loved it and we moved on to the accent colors.  her daughter wanted a chalk board wall too.  in conversation i learned that her daughter loves bright teal, was born in florida and loves the palm trees and tropical foliage of florida.  we toned down the bright teal and settled on the soft mint above for the chalk board wall and brought in the pale peach tint for inside the closet.

after the painter finished the walls and painted all the oak trim in white dove, the furniture was placed and window treatments (white cellular blinds) were installed.  the desk was a last minute decision, my client and her daughter decided that a desk was important to her (she likes to do art and work at a desk).  i had a vision for a floating desk in all white that would occupy the very small nook at what would become the end/corner area at the foot of the bunked.   to stay on budget (under $8K for the space), this wayfair desk was used:

i had the carpenter remove the legs and mount the top of the desk to the wall (please excuse my blurry iPhone shot!)

it's coming along but not quite finished, the screws need to be covered, more styling done, and i can only imagine what it will look like with new flooring.   the art was key to this tiny desk nook, using a large art print with the sky, palms and birds soaring opens up the wall and space so that the client's daughter won't feel like she's actually sitting in a corner.

here is the other side of the room.

the artwork was hung and some initial styling done to the diaper changing area as we wait for the new swing-arm sconce and baskets. it's always nice to create a space to welcome a new life to...brings designing to a whole new level.  much love and happy saturday.  xx, dana

simple, airy, lots of white would describe this ethereal home in south yarra, australia.  simple, over sized white tiles lead you from the entry into an uplifting place accentuated with pastels and the slightest touches of copper and gold.  enjoy the view.  xx, dana

client design | a modern baby nursery

this is where/what i've been working on lately...this "mini" design board and several design meetings for a very special client having a baby girl in april.  we started the process off with a whole house feng shui consultation and it evolved into the design of this space.  having been "out of the baby biz" for quite some time, there's been a lot of "baby education" going on here!

i came into the mix after my client picked out the crib and bunk bed for a baby nursery and young daughter room combination.  she loved the design board, so we ran with the color scheme based on the lovely art above.  the new baby will have a warm, inviting nook and space for the diaper changing table; the shared closet will be painted inside and organized for each  child to have their own side.  designing a shared space presents some challenges, but this design calls for optimization; lending itself to the creation of cherished spaces of comfort, joy, and many happy memories.  stay tuned for more progress.  xx, dana
